US Funds Moderna Bird Flu Vaccine

Due to recent outbreaks in dairy cows and workers, the U.S. government has awarded Moderna $176 million to advance the development of its mRNA-based bird flu vaccine. Late-stage testing will begin in 2025, focusing on safety and immune response. The contract includes options to accelerate development if needed. While the risk to the public remains low, discussions are ongoing about potentially vaccinating farm workers. The government is also working with Pfizer on an H5N1 vaccine and has secured doses from CSL Seqirus for potential use in high-risk groups. The FDA is continuously monitoring dairy products for avian flu and recommends against consuming raw milk.
