Mad Cow Concerns

British authorities are responding to the first mad cow disease (BSE) case in over two years. The Scottish government confirmed a case of classical BSE on a farm in southwest Scotland. While this is cause for concern, there is a low risk to public health, according to officials. Precautionary measures have been implemented, including movement restrictions on the farm and animals that may have been in contact with the infected case. The origin of the disease on this farm is still under investigation. Notably, BSE cases have significantly declined in recent years, with near-zero occurrences globally offering relief and optimism. The last confirmed classical BSE case in Britain was in 2021.
